Assistant Property Manager 

Reports to: Director of Agriculture and Property  

Status: Hourly/Non-Exempt, 40 hours per week  

MEarth is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering connections between people and the environment. We aim to educate and inspire through environmental stewardship, serving students and community members in Monterey County and the surrounding region at the scenic Hilton Bialek Habitat in Carmel. We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Assistant Property Manager to support the Director of Agriculture and Property in maintaining the Hilton Bialek Habitat.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position, typically scheduled Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with occasional weekend work.

Position Overview:

The MEarth Assistant Property Manager works closely with the Agriculture and Property Director to oversee the ten-acre Hilton Bialek Habitat. This role includes managing MEarth’s edible and educational gardens, native demonstration gardens, greenhouses, living roof, and the L.E.E.D.-certified multi-use culinary classroom. 

Responsive to seasonal changes and evolving programming, the Assistant Property Manager will face new challenges daily. This position also supports MEarth’s agricultural initiatives, contributing to the production of healthy organic food and advancing our environmental education goals.

The Assistant Property Manager will receive on-the-job training on restorative gardening, organic gardening, record-keeping, and safe equipment operation.

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

- Assist with propagation efforts, greenhouse work, soil fertility, composting, crop rotation, pruning, irrigation, transplanting, and pest management in the edible garden.

- Ensure that property facilities and equipment, such as the tool shed, greenhouse, irrigation systems, and hand tools, are safe and operational.

- Maintain the property in a presentable condition for donor tours, community visitors, field trips, and work-study students.

- Oversee volunteers, interns, and habitat visitors to ensure a rewarding experience while helping to maintain the property.

- Assist with occasional education and outreach activities, such as workshops and community events.

Desired Education and Experience:

BA or BS in Agriculture or Environmental Studies; at least two years of experience in agriculture, gardening, or landscaping.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- Proven ability in property, garden, and habitat maintenance.

- Comprehensive knowledge of plants and proficiency in horticulture and agriculture techniques.

- A positive attitude, enthusiasm for work, and flexibility to adapt to changing needs.

- Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with youth, peers, volunteers, and interns.

- Experience working collaboratively in teams and independently.

- Good judgment, promptness, and sound decision-making abilities.

- Strong verbal and written communication skills.

- Familiarity with Google Workspace or willingness to learn.

Required Physical Capabilities:

The role involves working outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions. Typical tasks may include bending, crouching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, and lifting instructional equipment and supplies. Regular use and maintenance of equipment, machinery, and hand tools are required.

Background Check:

Successful completion of the hiring process is contingent upon passing a multi-agency livescan fingerprint/background check and TB test (paid for by MEarth).

Compensation:

$26 per hour, depending on relevant professional experience.
